Konečně jsem opět dostala příležitost se setkat s power metalovou kapelou Hammer King a také konečně udělat rozhovor s jejím frontmanem Titanem Foxem V.
Ahoj Titane, můžeš českým fanouškům představit sebe a svou kapelu?
Určitě. My jsme Hammer King, to znamená, že jsme kapela, která slouží Králi Kladivo, což je pravděpodobně nejbrutálnější a nejnemilosrdnější vládce na světě. To je král králů a ještě víc a koncept je takový: přijdeme na nějaké místo a prohlásíme to místo za královské území, což je v němčině „Hochheitsgebieten“, což zní fantasticky. Jediná možnost, kterou jsi dostal, je žít uvnitř tohoto „Hochheitsgebieten“, dát svůj život králi a král se ti pak pomalu odvděčí zlatem, možná fyzickými požitky nebo možná někdy i bolestí, to nikdy nevíš.
O to jde a my chválíme krále, zpíváme písně o králi a samozřejmě to, co by měla dělat každá metalová kapela, že přinášíme lidem hudbu a že lidi spojujeme. Opravdu si myslím, že hudba je možná meč míru, spojuje lidi. V dnešní době je to důležité.
S tím souhlasím. Své poslední album jste vydali loni, psala jsem o něm i recenzi (můžete si ji přečíst zde na odkazu). Mohl bys nám říct, co je pro tebe hlavní inspirací pro psaní témat tvých textů a hudby?
Většinou to řeším až na samém konci procesu. Když si člověk projde všechny nové písničky, tak tam nějaký námět je. Naposledy to bylo hodně o tom, že král se stává císařem, je větší, lepší, má větší moc. Předtím jsme měli „Kingdemonium“, vždycky říkám, že to bylo album v coroně, všichni jsme byli šokovaní tím, co se stalo se světem v téhle době. Takže jsme měli velmi temné album a z textů bylo vidět, že království bylo napadeno a král musel bránit svou říši.
Zázračné na psaní písní pro mě je, že neexistuje žádný koncept. Prostě začnete psát a jednoho dne vstanete, když máte pocit, že byste mohli mít nápad. Někdy si řeknete, dobře, příště mám pět dní volna, tak budu psát písničky. Ale za psaním písní není žádný striktní koncept. Je to inspirace, je to radost z hudby.
V roce 2024 jsme odehráli 30 koncertů, ve skutečnosti je to 29, ale 30 zní lépe a nikdy jsme tolik koncertů v jednom roce neodehráli. Určitě zjistíte, jaká písnička naživo funguje a jaká není naživo ideální. Myslím, že až budeme dělat další desku, hodně se zaměříme na písničky, o kterých víme, že budou fungovat naživo, protože chceme zapojit co nejvíc lidí. Jako teď tady v Hellraiseru, čím víc lidí se přidá, tím je show lepší, protože metal je něco pro každého, nejen pro kluky na pódiu.
Mluvil jsi o změnách, konečně jsi odložil kytaru a na pódiu se soustředíš pouze na zpěv.
Jo, to bylo asi nejtěžší rozhodnutí za hodně dlouhou dobu. Na kytaru jsem hrál v podstatě odjakživa a myslím, že moje hra na kytaru je pro kapelu dost zásadní. To neznamená, že jsem nejlepší kytarista, jen na kytaru hodně píšu, a proto zníme tak, jak zníme. Takže to bylo těžké rozhodnutí ji odložit, a když jsme loni jeli turné s Warkings, byl jsem tak trochu, frustrovaný je silné slovo, ale myslím, že to na mě bylo moc, když jsem viděl, co ostatní kluci dokážou, a všichny kapely měli zpěváka. Já jsem byl na tom turné jediný, kdo měl kytaru, a myslel jsem si, že je to jen přítěž. Bylo velmi těžké pracovat kolem kytary a pravou ruku jsem měl stejně neustále ve vzduchu, takže jsem na kytaru už ani pořádně nehrál, protože jsem chtěl oslovit lidi.
V rámci kapely to byl boj. V kapele byli lidé, kteří byli úplně proti a říkali, že kytaru NESMÍŠ opustit. Je důležitá a ostatní kluci byli spíš „Ach jo, no já fakt nevím, možná je to v pořádku?“, takže nikdo nebyl úplně pro. Jednou v neděli jsme byli v čínské restauraci, ten den jsme měli kapelní večer, a tak jsme si povídali, dali jsme si nějaké jídlo a já trval na tom, že to zkusím. A pak najednou asi i kvůli tomu jídlu souhlasili a řekli, dobře, proč si prostě nevybrat pár koncertů a nezkusit to. Máme tohle turné Zimní kampaň, 7 koncertů s Dominum a další dva koncerty s Die Apokalyptischen Reiter, takže budeme mít čas to vyzkoušet.
Vzpomínám si, že na první zkoušce, kde jsme to zkusili se mnou bez kytary, Günt říkal: „Tak jo, tohle má nějakou energii, kterou jsme předtím neměli.“ Na tomhle turné jsme toho hodně získali, každým večerem je to lepší a lepší. Takže je to správné rozhodnutí a nechci toho říct moc, ale možná by se v budoucnu mohl objevit ještě jeden, druhý kytarista. To je věc, o které sním, ale musí to být perfektní člověk.
Pro mě osobně je trochu zvláštní vidět Vás jen s jednou kytarou, ale na druhou stranu vidět tebe, jak lépe zpíváš a víc si užíváš show a víc spolupracuješ s lidmi, je prostě skvělé a funguje to opravdu dobře.
Nejdřív jsme si prostě řekli, že to uděláme jen s jednou kytarou, protože není potřeba hledat dalšího kytaristu a pak říct: „Necítím se dobře, musím zpátky hrát na kytaru.“ A pak bychom toho kluka museli vyhodit. Tak jsme to zkusili takhle a moc se nám to líbí. Pro mě je dobré, že se můžu opravdu uvolnit. Jsou večery, kdy se člověk necítí na vrcholu sil, protože je třeba nachlazený, a když se teď dívám, jak to obejít, můžu teď dvacet vteřin stát, dýchat a znovu nabrat energii. Dřív jsem hrál sólo, ladil kytaru nebo dělal něco jiného, nikdy jsem na pódiu ani nepil. Takže to všechno je úspěšná změna a třeba v budoucnu najdeme toho ideálního člověka, který se bude hodit do konceptu, protože já osobně tuhle kapelu vidím se dvěma kytaristy.
Na albu to bude každopádně stejná kapela jako dřív, budu hrát minimálně 50 % kytarových částí jako vždycky. Naštěstí je Gino takový týmový hráč a souhlasil, že se během pár týdnů naučí všechna sóla, ale takový on už je, je úžasný.
Mluvil jsi o tom, že brzy půjdete do studia a začnete nahrávat, můžeš tedy říct něco víc?
Nevím, jestli smím něco říct, ale něco řeknu. Do studia půjdeme v únoru, což je, dejme tomu, za čtyři týdny, a máme napsáno hodně písniček.
Samozřejmě další změna, kterou v kapele máme, je, že oficiálním bubeníkem je teď Count Shandorian, který je s námi s přestávkami skoro dva roky. Bylo období, kdy nebylo jisté, jestli si Dolph najde čas na hraní na plný úvazek nebo ne. Jednoho dne, když jsme se sešli na zkoušce, Dolph vešel do místnosti a já si říkal, že je něco divného, že asi nepřipravuje bicí stejnou rychlostí jako vždycky, a pak šel do jedné části místnosti a já si říkal, že nikdy za ty roky nestál tenhle chlap v tomhle rohu místnosti, říkal jsem si, že je něco ohromně jinak. Pak řekl: „Kluci, než začneme hrát, měli bychom si asi promluvit.“ A já jsem okamžitě řekl: „Můžete mě zabít nebo ne, ale měl jsem pocit, že něco takového by se dneska mohlo stát.“ A on jen řekl: „V létě jsem měl pár týdnů volno a vidím, že se kapela rozrůstá a máme víc práce, ale pro mě je to rozhodně v nejhorší době.“ A to bylo v podstatě všechno. Nikdy tam nebyla žádná zlá krev nebo tak něco. A tenhle chlápek (Count) se kolem kapely pohybuje už dva roky a hrál všechna vystoupení, které Dolph nemohl, a proto to byla zcela jasná volba. Ani jsme se ho neptali, jestli se chce přidat, prostě jsme si ho nechali.
Jsou tam určité rozdíly, Ivo (Count) je velmi výkonný bubeník a není to nejpomalejší bubeník na světě, takže si myslím, že toho využijeme a uděláme pár docela rychlých písniček. Myslím, že to bude album, na kterém uslyšíte klasické věci od Hammer King a možná uslyšíte, jak už jsem říkal, i písničky, o kterých si myslíme, že budou na pódiu fungovat velmi dobře. Jsem si jistý, že jsme se také dost poučili z posledních turné, kdy jsme hráli s kapelami, které naživo fungovaly opravdu dobře. Takže by to mělo být fantastické album.
Já v to věřím taky, protože to poslední bylo za mě fakt super.
Víš, zvláštní je, že když jsme dělali písničku „König und Kaiser“, tak jsme se nejdřív trochu báli, protože je jiná a je v ní hodně německých slov. Nejdřív jsem se trochu bál hrát ji naživo a teď je to pro mě osobně vždycky jeden z vrcholů. Protože se na pódiu objeví Majordomus and Dívka krále a my si můžeme trochu zahrát s lidmi, takže to bylo něco velmi příjemného. Zábava je to i pro nás, a proto si myslím, že chceme mít takové písničky, nějaké hodně silné písničky, a na to album se moc těším.
Pojďme se teď bavit více o tobě, říkal jsi, že jsi kytaru odložil, ale pořád tě baví. Jaké byly/jsou tvé motivace hrát na kytaru a kdo byl tvůj kytarový vzor?
No, to je dobrá otázka. Především je to už docela dávno, jsem schopen si vzpomenout? Chodil jsem na školu s hudebním zaměřením, patřil jsem mezi kluky, kteří nehráli na žádný nástroj, a můj učitel hudební výchovy byl pohodový chlapík, poslouchal i jazz a měl rád Queen. Ten tenkrát řekl mým rodičům: „Myslím, že by měl hrát na nějaký nástroj.“ A moje máma řekla: „Dobře, a co byste navrhoval?“ A ten učitel řekl: „No, buď na trubku, nebo na kytaru.“ A já jsem rád, jsme se rozhodli pro kytaru.
Vždycky jsem měl rád rockovou a metalovou hudbu a můj táta je jen o 23 let starší než já, takže mám velmi mladé rodiče a v podstatě jsme s tátou společně viděli mnoho kapel naživo. Tehdy jsem poslouchal Billyho Idola a na kytaru u něj hrál Steve Stevens a měl takové ty křiklavé neonově růžové a žluté kytary z osmdesátých let a já si říkal, že to vypadá fantasticky. Chtěl bych mít jednu takovou kytaru a jednu podobnou jsem si pořídil a začal jsem pracovat na hře. Měl jsem učitele, na kterého nebylo spolehnutí, a byl pořád pryč, tak jsem měl dalšího učitele, na kterého taky nebylo spolehnutí, ale od těch dvou lidí jsem se naučil dost, abych se zbytek mohl naučit tak nějak sám, a to bylo v době před youtube, dneska je snadné se naučit na kytaru. Takže jsem na to přišel sám, poslouchal jsem desky, nahrávky se sluchátky, poslouchal jsem co nejblíž a zkoušel všechno možné. Učil jsem se hodně sám od sebe a pak tu byl samozřejmě Steve Stevens a pak to byli Def Leppard, kteří měli dalšího Steva, Steva Clarka, toho chlápka s kytarou na kolenou, který byl velmi muzikální, hodně procítěný ve své hře. Byly tu miliardy dalších lidí, ale tihle dva Steveové byli asi první dva lidé, kteří mě jako kytaristu vlastně opravdu ovlivnili.
Je to velmi zajímavé, pořád hraju na kytaru, dělám to během zvukové zkoušky, protože musíme zkoušet, takže mám kytaru pořád na cestách a těhle 2-5 minut jsou vždycky velmi příjemné. Kytara je jako můj nejlepší přítel. Není na ní nic špatného, ať dělám cokoliv, nikdy mi neublíží, když to zkazím, tak je jí to jedno. Jako zpěvák, když přijdeš o hlas, je to hodně osobní, je to problém. Kytara je něco velmi příjemného a těším se, až půjdu do studia a budu hrát opět na kytaru. To jsou dva různé světy a někdy se člověk musí rozhodnout.
Máš nějaký vzkaz pro české fanoušky?
Ano! V České republice jsme hráli myslím třikrát. Já jsem tam hrál třikrát, Hammer King tam hráli myslím dvakrát, už si to nepamatuju. Těžko říct, každý muzikant má své zvláštní publikum, ale myslím, že Česká republika je sama o sobě zvláštní publikum. Nevím, co je mezi Českou republikou a metalem. Hrál jsem s Ross The Boss (bývalá kapela pozn.) na fantastickém festivalu Masters of Rock, myslím, že tam bylo kolem 25 000 lidí a bylo to naprosto fantastické. Všude byli lidi, jeden z největších davů, před kterým jsem kdy hrál, naprosto fantastický. A pak na druhé straně jsem hrál v jednom klubu s Hammer King and Mystic Prophecy, kde se klub musel přestěhovat a v podstatě tam nebylo žádné publikum, možná tak 30 lidí, ale přesto těch 30 lidí ten večer rozpoutalo peklo, bylo to fantastické od začátku do konce. Když hraješ v Německu a je tam 60 nebo 70 lidí, musíš do toho investovat energii celý večer, protože jinak by se unudili a šli domů. To bylo něco, co je pro mě velmi důležité. My dva se známe už několik let a dnes večer jsou v publiku další lidé, kteří přijeli z České republiky, a všichni jsou velice přátelští. Existuje něco, co se mnou opravdu rezonuje, chtěl bych hrát v České republice mnohem, mnohem častěji. A rád bych si zase zahrál na Masters of Rock.

I finally got opportunity to meet power metal band Hammer King again and also to make an interview with their frontman Titan Fox V.
Hello Titan, can you introduce yourself and your band to the Czech fans?
Absolutely. We are Hammer King, which means that we are the band that serves the Hammer King, which is probably the most brutal and ruthless ruler in the world. That’s the king of kings and beyond and the concept is this: we come to a place and we declare this place a royal territory which is „Hochheitsgebieten“ in German, which sounds fantastic and the only chance that you got is to live inside this „Hochheitsgebiet“ to give your life to the king and then the king will slowly repay you with gold, with maybe physical pleasures or maybe sometimes with pain, you never know.
That’s the thing and we praise the king, we sing songs about the king and of course what should be behind every metal band is that you bring music to the people and that you connect people. I really think music is maybe a sword of peace, you bring people together. It’s important, in these times.
I agree with that. You released your latest album last year, I also wrote a review about it (you can read here on the link). Could you tell us what’s your main inspiration for writing topics for your lyrics and music?
Usually that’s very late in the process, that’s always at the very the end. There’s sort of a topic, when you look through all the new songs. Last time it was very much about the king also becoming Kaiser, being bigger, better, having more power. Before that we had „Kingdemonium“, I always say that’s been the corona album, we‘ve always been shocked by what happened to the world in these times. So we had a very dark album and lyrically you could see that the kingdom was attacked and the king had to defend his realm.
The miracle about writing songs for me is that there is no concept. You just start writing and someday you stand up, when you have the feeling you might have an idea. Sometimes you say okay next time I have five days off so I will write songs. But there’s no strict concept behind writing songs. Gladly it’s inspiration, it’s the joy of music.
We’ve played 30 shows in 2024, actually it’s 29 but 30 sounds better and we’ve never played that many shows in one year. You definitely find out what song works live and what song is not the perfect live song. I think when we do the next album we will very much focus on songs that we know will works live because we want to engage as many people as possible, because like we just did here at the Hellraiser, the more people join the better the show is, because metal is something for everyone, not only for the guys on stage.
You were talking about some changes, you finally put the guitar away and you’re focusing more on the singing on stage.
Yeah, that has been probably the hardest decision in a very long time. I’ve played guitar basically forever, and I think that my guitar playing is quite elementary for the band. That doesn’t mean I am the greatest guitarist, it’s just I write a lot on the guitar, therefore we sound the way we do. So it was a tough decision to put it away and when we did the tour with Warkings last year I was sort of, frustrated is a strong word, but I think it was too much for me to see what the other guys could do and they all had a singer. I was the only one on the tour that had a guitar and I only thought it was a burden. It was very hard to work around the guitar and my right arm was in the air constantly so I didn’t even play the guitar properly any more because I wanted to reach the people.
It was a struggle within the band. There were people in the band who were totally against it and said you CANNOT leave the guitar. It’s important and other guys were more „Ah yeah well I don’t really know, maybe it’s ok?“, so nobody was really for it. One Sunday we were at a Chinese restaurant, it was a band evening that day and we talked, we had some food and I insisted on trying it. And then suddenly because of the food probably they agreed and they said okay why don’t we just pick a couple of shows and try it. We have this Winter Campaign tour, 7 shows with Dominum and two more shows with Die Apokalyptischen Reiter so we will have the time to try it.
I remember the first rehearsal that we did with me without the guitar Günt would say „Oh, okay, this has got some energy that we didn’t have before“. We gained so much on this tour, it’s getting better every evening. So it’s the right decision and I don’t wanna say too much but maybe in the future there should be another, second guitarist. That’s the thing that I dream of but it has to be the perfect guy.
For me it’s kind of weird to see you with just one guitar but on the other hand to see you just singing and enjoying the show more and working with the people more it’s just so great and it works so well.
At first we just said let’s just do it with one guitar because there’s no need to look for another guitarist and then say „I don’t feel well I need to go back to play the guitar“ and then we have to kick out that guy. So we tried it and we totally like it and the good thing for me is that I can really relax. There are nights where you don’t feel at the top of the game because maybe you have a cold and now looking how to work around that, now I can stand for 20 seconds, breathe and regain energy. Back in the day I would play a solo, I’d tune the guitar and I’d do something else, I’d never even drink on stage. So that’s all a successful change and maybe in the future we will find this perfect guy who fits in the concept because personally I see this band as a two-guitar band.
On the album it’s going to be the same band as before any ways, I’d play at least 50% of the guitars as always. Thankfully, Gino is such a team player and he agreed to learn all the solos within a couple of weeks but that’s the way he is, he’s wonderful.
You were talking about going to the studio soon and you will start recording so can you say something more?
I don’t know if I am allowed to say anything but I’ll say something. We’ll be in the studio in February which let’s pretend is in four weeks and we have written many songs.
Of course the other change we have in the band is that Count Shandorian is the official drummer now, he’s been with us for almost two years on and off. There was a period where it wasn’t sure if Dolph would be finding the time to play full time or not and there was one day when we met for rehearsal, Dolph entered the room and I thought something is strange, I think he’s not really preparing the drums at the same speed as always and then he walked to a part of the room and I thought never in all these years has this guy stood in this corner of the room, I thought something is vastly different. Then he said: „Guys, before we play we should probably talk.“ And I immediately said: „You can kill me or not but I have a feeling that something like this would happen today.“ And he just said: „I had some weeks off in the Summer and I see that the band is getting bigger and getting more work but it’s definitely at the worst time for me.“ And that was basically all. There was never any bad blood or anything. And this guy (Count) has been around the band for two years and he did all the shows that Dolph would not do and therefore it was the very obvious choice. We have not even asked if he wants to join, we just kept him.
There are some differences, Ivo (Count) is a very powerful drummer and he’s not the slowest drummer in the world so I think we will take advantage of this and do some quite fast songs. I think it’s gonna be an album where you can hear regular Hammer King stuff and you might hear, as I said before, songs that we think will do on stage very well and I am very sure that we will also have learned quite a lot from the last tours when we played with bands that worked really well live. So it should be a fantastic album.
I believed so as well, because the last one was really cool for me.
You know the strange thing is when we did „König und Kaiser“ song at first we were a bit worried because it’s different and it’s got a lot of German things in it. At first I was a bit scared to play it live and now for me personally it’s always one of the highlights. Because The Majordomus appears and the Maiden of the king appears on stage and we can play a bit with the people so that has been something very enjoyable. The entertainment is also for us and therefore I think we want to have some songs like this, some very powerful songs and I am totally looking forward to that album.
Let’s talk more about you now, you said you put the guitar away but you still like it so what were/are your motivations to play the guitar and who was your guitar hero?
Woah, that’s a good question. First of all, it’s been quite long ago, am I able to remember? I was at a school that had musical focus, I was one of the guys who did not play any instrument and my music teacher was a cool guy, he also listened to jazz and he liked Queen and he told my parents back in the day: „I think he should play an instrument.“ And my mom said: „Okay, what would you suggest?“ and that guy said: „Well, either the trumpet or the guitar.“ and gladly we decided for the guitar and I said okay.
I’ve always liked rock and metal music and my father is only 23 years older than I so I have very young parents and basically my father and I have seen many bands live together. I was listening to Billy Idol back then and he used to have Steve Stevens on the guitar and he had these flashy neon pink yellow guitars from the eighties and I thought that’s fantastic. I’d like to have one of these guitars and I got one pretty close and I started working. I had a teacher who was not reliable and he was away so I had another teacher who was not reliable but I had learned enough from these two people that the rest I could sort of learn by myself and that was pre-youtube, today it’s easy to learn the guitar. So I figured it out myself, listened to albums, records with headphones, listening as close as possible and trying everything. I learnt very much from myself and there was Steve Stevens of course and then it was Def Leppard who had another Steve, Steve Clark, the guy with the guitar on his knees who was very musical, very much feeling in his playing and there’s been bazillions of other people but these two Steves probably were the first two people that really influenced me as a guitarist actually.
It’s been very interesting, I still play the guitar, I do it during the soundcheck because we have to check so I still got the guitar on the road and these 2-5 minutes are always very enjoyable, so the guitar is like my best friend. There’s nothing bad about it, whatever I do it’s never harming me, when I fuck up it doesn’t matter. As a vocalist, when you lose your voice it’s very personal, that’s a problem. The guitar is something very enjoyable and I’m looking forward to going to the studio and play the guitar. That’s the two worlds, sometimes you have to decide.
Do you have some message for the Czech fans?
Yes! We’ve played the Czech Republic I think 3 times. I’ve played it 3 times, I think Hammer King has played it 2 times, I don’t remember. It’s difficult to say, every musician has a special audience but I think the Czech Republic has a special audience, I don’t know what it is about the metal in Czech Republic but I’ve played with Ross The Boss (former band) the fantastic Masters of Rock, I think it’s been around 25000 people and it’s been absolutely fantastic. There were people everywhere, one of the biggest crowds I’ve ever played, absolutely fantastic. And then on the other side I’ve played this club with Hammer King and Mystic Prophecy where the club had to move and there’s been basically no audience, maybe 30 people or so, but still these 30 people raised hell that evening it was fantastic from start to finish. When you do Germany and there’s 60 or 70 people, you have to invest energy all night because otherwise they would die and go home. That has been something that is very important to me. We’ve known each other for a couple of years and there are other people in the audience tonight that come from Czech Republic and all of them are friendly with us. There is something that really resonates with me, I’d like to play the Czech Republic far, far more often. And I’d like to play Masters of Rock again.
