Dne 2.11.2024 se mi podařilo udělat rozhovor se třemi kytarovými superhrdiny (oběmi kytaristy a basákem) z Grailknights, těmi jsou Sovereign Storm, Count Cranium and Duncan MacLoud.

Je opravdu fajn vás všechny konečně vidět, jelikož jste v Praze ani v České republice nějakou dobu nebyli. Naposledy jste tu byli před osmi lety?

Count: Jo, v roce 2016 jsme byli na turné s Van Canto.
Storm: To už je pěkných pár let.

Proč jste se do Prahy nevrátili dřív? Proč až teď?

Count: No, protože nás pozvali Brothers of Metal, abychom se k nim připojili na turné, což je super, protože dneska máme druhý koncert, včera to byla pecka, lidi byli nažhavení a my jsme si to užili a laťka je vysoko! Na celé turné se moc těšíme, protože jsou to tři týdny?
Duncan: 17 nebo 18 koncertů, je to asi nejdelší turné, které jsme kdy absolvovali. Tři týdny v kuse.
Count: Jo, docela dlouhá doba mimo domov. Docela se na to těšíme. A proč jsme do Prahy nejezdili častěji? Víš, koncertování mimo Německo může být někdy komplikované, když nemáš tolik koncertů za sebou, když máš jen víkendové koncerty, musíš taky naplánovat celou trasu a cestu a Praha nikdy nepřipadala v úvahu nebo ta šance tu nebyla.
Duncan: My nehrajeme mimo Německo tak často, je to buď ve festivalové sezóně, když jsme v jiné zemi, nebo když je to součást turné. A pokud je to součást turné, musí to být evropské turné. Takže to musí být dost velké, jinak to není jednoduché.
Count: Přesně tak, i když máme v plánu se vrátit, rozhodně brzy.

To je opravdu dobré slyšet. Jaké jsou vaše plány po tomto turné?

Duncan: Týden odpočinku! To je první věc!
Storm: Ve vaně.
Duncan: To mi zní skvěle!
Storm: Ne, momentálně píšeme nové písničky, už jsme natočili klip.
Count: Dneska uslyšíte dokonce novou písničku.
Duncan: Jo, už jsme jednu písničku nahráli a natočili k ní videoklip, ale musíme ještě chvíli počkat, než ji vydáme.
Count: Říkali jsme si: „Jo, ta písnička je dobrá, chceme ji ukázat.“ I když ještě není oficiálně vydaná. Je to sranda.
Duncan: A včera to bylo docela super!

Takže můžeme očekávat nové album? Nebo budete vydávat jen singly?

Duncan: Určitě vydáme album a ne jen singly, takže se můžete těšit.

Hlavní otázkou dnešního dne je, proč vlastně superhrdinové jako vy hrají metal?

Storm: Co jiného by mohli superhrdinové hrát? Je to jediná opravdu superhrdinská hudba, která mě pro superhrdiny napadá.
Count: Jasně, nechtěli byste slyšet superhrdinský… rap? Nebo superhrdinský lo-fi pop?
Duncan: Musí to mít nějakou sílu! Takže power metal se tomu asi dost blíží. Ten má nejvíc energie.

Jak vás napadlo být superhrdiny a mít takové barevné kostýmy?

Count: Vlastně jsme se tak narodili, nevybrali jsme si, že budeme superhrdinové, prostě jsme. Protože superhrdinou může být každý, stačí jen najít svého vnitřního hrdinu… Já momentálně jen nejsem tak probuzený.
Duncan: Ne, pravdivý příběh je, že to byl nápad na halloweenském večírku, myslím.
Storm: V němčině se tomu říká „Schnapsidee“, když jsi hodně opilý a říkáš si „Jo, to je skvělý nápad“.
Count: Však víš, typický rozhovor dvou chlapů, kdy si řeknou „Měli bychom si otevřít bar!“. „Určitě bychom si měli otevřít bar!“ Bylo to jako: „Měli bychom si založit metalovou kapelu se superhrdiny!“ „Joooo, to bychom měli udělat!“
Duncan: Proč ale nosit kostýmy superhrdinů? Protože se viděli v halloweenských kostýmech a řekli si: „Sakra, musíme udělat kapelu v těchhle kostýmech!“ A to byl začátek, to byla jiskra, která zažehla ten nápad.
Count: Ten večer se zrodili Grailknights.
Duncan: A jsem si docela jistý, že to byla halloweenská párty, takže je to skoro výročí.
Count: 16 let.

Váš hudební styl se v průběhu let trochu změnil. Našli jste se více v power metalu?

Duncan: Myslím, že na začátku bylo překvapivé, že to vypadalo dost lacině a docela směšně, ale hudba byla melodický death metal. Tam byl ten kontrast a některé věci fungovaly docela dobře. Ale pak jsme se rozhodli přejít na power metal, protože jsme si všichni uvědomili: „Hm, možná bychom mohli zkusit zpívat?
Storm: Nemyslím si, že to bylo skutečné rozhodnutí, spíš vývoj.
Count: V kapele došlo i ke změnám, přidaly se různé hudební styly a prostě to tak nějak vyplynulo do power metalu.

Nejsem si jistá, kdo píše většinu písní ve vaší kapele, ale kdo nebo co vás nejvíce ovlivňuje při psaní hudby?

Duncan: To je těžké, protože na to není tak jednoduché odpovědět. Většinou všichni píšeme písničky, různé kousky, různé části a sbíráme je, a když někdo nad nějakou písničkou sedí moc dlouho, jde se zeptat ostatních a ti mu přijdou pomoct a pokaždé je to jiné. Ale hlavním autorem písní je asi Sir Optimus Prime, ale všichni píšeme.
Count: Neřekl bych, že existuje něco jako „hlavní vliv“, jako mají ostatní kapely, styl hudby, který všichni posloucháme, je dost odlišný.
Storm: Od pop-rockových věcí až po brutální death metal.

Všichni jste kytaristé, kdo jsou vaši hrdinové a proč jste si vybrali právě svůj nástroj?

Storm: Mojí inspirací byla Metallica, miloval jsem a stále miluji Jamese Hetfielda a Kirka Hammeta, kteří mě nejvíce ovlivnili při výběru kytary.
Count: Protože on (Sovereign Storm) je můj starší bratr, byl u toho, když jsem začínal hrát na kytaru, a dodnes se vždycky snažím držet s ním krok, protože on cvičí o něco víc než já.
Storm: To nejsou slzy, jen se mi potí oči! Díky, chlape.
Count: Proto bych řekl, že ti, kteří tě ovlivnili, jsou víceméně ti, kteří ovlivnili mě, on to nasál a vyplivl na mě.
Duncan: Já na kytaru nehraju, ale umím na ni hrát, ale tady hraju na basu.
Count: Přesně tak, ty NEhraješ na kytaru.
JÁ: Na falešnou kytaru!
Duncan: Jiskrou, která mě přiměla vzít kytaru do ruky, bylo to, že jsem tehdy poslouchal hodně klasického rocku a blues rocku a jeden z mých nejlepších kamarádů začal hrát na bicí a přišel za mnou a řekl: „Hele, začni hrát na kytaru! Pak můžeme udělat kapelu!“ A já na to: ‚Jo, uděláme kapelu!‘ A tak jsem začal hrát na kytaru a jednoho dne se mě Grailknights zeptali, jestli bych se k nim nepřidal na basu, takže to je ten příběh. Nikdy jsem neměl opravdového kytarového hrdinu nebo něco takového, nejspíš asi Billyho Gibbonse nebo Anguse Younga.

Těšíte se na své turné? Navštívíte nějaká nová místa nebo dokonce země?

Duncan: Těšili jsme se na to asi rok. Nové země asi ne, vy už jste v Maďarsku hráli, ne?
Storm: Jo, ale už je to dávno.
Count: Já se na to fakt těším, už od oznámení turné se na to těším. Je to vrchol letošního roku, že se konečně uskuteční tohle turné. Byl to zvláštní pocit večer před začátkem turné před dvěma dny, seděl jsem doma a říkal si „jo, ta chvíle je tady“. Čekal jsem na to rok a teď jsme tady a je to opravdu vzrušující.

Duncan: Doufejme!
Storm: Také Brothers of Metal jsou opravdu skvělí lidé. Taky skvělá kapela.

Máte nějaký vzkaz pro své staré i nové fanoušky?

Storm: Samozřejmě jsme hrdí na své staré fanoušky, kteří jsou s námi už docela dlouho, a doufáme, že na tomto turné získáme nějaké nové fanoušky. Bylo by skvělé je vidět, třeba příští rok na našem turné… pokud nějaké bude. To je překvapení!
Count: Možná…
Storm: Jsme opravdu vděční za všechno, co se stalo, a těšíme se na věci, které se stanou.
Duncan: Doufám, že sem přijde spousta nových lidí a poznají nás díky Brothers of Metal.
Count: Myslím, že noví lidé uvidí, proč je dobré být součástí rodiny Grailknights, protože kolem kapely máme VELMI věrné fanoušky a přátele, kteří jsou s námi už mnoho let, a myslím, že je vždycky skvělý pocit vidět, jak se ta rodina víc a víc rozrůstá. Ne s dětmi, ale víš jak to myslím. Více dospělých fanoušků s bankovními účty.

On 2.11.2024 I managed to interview with three guitar superheroes (both guitarists and bass player) from Grailknights, Sovereign Storm, Count Cranium and Duncan MacLoud.

It’s really good to finally see you all, because you haven’t been to Prague or the Czech Republic. The last time you were here was 8 years ago.

Count: Yeah, in 2016, we were on tour with Van Canto.
Storm: Quite a few years.

Why didn’t you come back to Prague earlier? Why now?

Count: Well, because we’ve been invited by Brothers of Metal to join them on tour, which is cool because I mean it’s the second show today, yesterday was a blast, people were on fire and we had a lot of fun and the stakes are high! We’re really looking forward to the whole tour because it’s three weeks?
Duncan: 17 or 18 shows, it’s probably the longest tour we’ve ever done. Three weeks in a row.
Count: Yeah, pretty long time away from home. We’re pretty excited about it. And why didn’t we come to Prague more often? You know, touring outside of Germany can be complicated sometimes when you don’t have so many shows in a row, when you have weekend shows you also have to plan the whole route and tour plans and Prague was never an option or the chance was never given.
Duncan: We don’t play outside of Germany that often either, it’s probably either in the festival season when we’re in another country or if it’s part of a tour. And if it’s part of a tour, it has to be a European tour. So it has to be pretty big, it’s not that easy.
Count: Right, although our plans are to come back, definitely soon.

That’s really good to hear. What are your plans after this tour?

Duncan: A week of rest! That’s the first thing!
Storm: In the bathtub.
Duncan: Sounds great to me!
Storm: Until your skin falls off… no, we’re writing some new songs at the moment, we’ve already shot a video.
Count: You will hear a new song today.
Duncan: Yeah, we already recorded a song and we already shot a music video for it but we have to wait a little bit before we can release it.
Count: Yeah, just to get in the mood, we were like „Yeah, the song is good, we want to show it“ even though it’s not officially released. It’s fun.
Duncan: And yesterday it was pretty awesome!

So can we expect a new album? Or will you just release singles?

Duncan: We will definitely release an album and not just singles so you can look forward to that.

The main question for today is actually why Superheroes like you play metal?

Storm: What else could superheroes play? It’s the only really superhero-like music I can think of for superheroes.
Count: Right, you wouldn’t want to hear superhero… rap? Or superhero lo-fi pop?
Duncan: It has to have some power! It has to be powerful, so power metal comes pretty close I guess. It has the most energy.

How did you get the idea to be superheroes and have these colourful costumes?

Count: Actually we were born this way, we didn’t choose to be superheroes, we just are. Since everyone can be a superhero, you just have to find your inner hero… I am not that awake at the moment.
Duncan: No, the true story is that it was an idea at a Halloween party I guess.
Storm: In German it’s called „Schnapsidee“, when you’re really drunk and you’re like „Yeah, what a great idea“.
Count: You know, the typical conversation between two guys where they say „We should open a bar!“ „We should totally open a bar!“ It was like: „We should start a metal band with superheroes!“ „Yeahaaah we should do it!“
Duncan: Why would they wear superhero costumes? Because they saw each other in Halloween costumes and said „Damn, we have to make a band in these costumes!“ and that was the start, that was the spark that ignited the idea.
Count: Grailknights were born that night.
Duncan: And I’m pretty sure it was a Halloween party, so it’s almost an anniversary.
Count: 16 years.

Your style has changed a bit over the years. Did you find yourself more in Power Metal?

Duncan: I think in the beginning the surprising thing was that it looked quite cheap and quite funny but the music was melodic death metal so there was a contrast to it and some of it worked quite well. But then we decided to switch to power metal because we all realised „Hm, maybe we can try singing?
Storm: I don’t think it was a real decision, more like an evolution.
Count: There were also changes in the band and different styles of music were added to the band and it just happened to flow into a kind of power metal.

I’m not sure who writes most of the songs in your band, but who or what is your biggest influence to write music?

Duncan: It’s difficult because it’s not so easy to answer because most of the time we all write songs, different pieces, different parts and we collect them and if someone is sitting on a song for too long they go and ask the others and they come and help and it’s always different. But the main songwriter is probably Sir Optimus Prime but we all do songwriting stuff.
Count: I wouldn’t say there’s anything like a „main influence“ like the other bands have, the style of music we all listen to is pretty different.
Storm: The range is quite extreme, it goes from pop rock things to brutal death metal.

You are all guitarists, so who are your heroes, why did you choose your instrument?

Storm: My inspiration was actually Metallica, I loved and still love James Hetfield and Kirk Hammet, they’re my biggest influence to pick up the guitar.
Count: Because he (Sovereign Storm) is my older brother, he was there when I started playing guitar and to this day I always try to challenge myself to keep up with him because he practices a little bit more than I do.
Storm: Those are not tears, my eyes are sweating! Thanks man.
Count: That’s why I would say that those who influenced you are more or less those who influenced me, he sucked it up and spit it out on me.
Duncan: I don’t play the guitar but I can play the guitar but I play the bass here.
Count: That’s right, you DON’T play the guitar.
ME: Fake guitar!
Duncan: The spark for me to pick up the guitar was that I was listening to a lot of classic rock and blues rock stuff back then and one of my best friends started to play drums and he came up to me and said „Hey, play the guitar! So we can make a band!“ and I was like „Yeah, let’s make a band!“ and then I started playing the guitar and one day the Grailknights asked me if I could join them on the bass, so that’s the story. I’ve never had a true guitar hero or something like that but probably Billy Gibbons or Angus Young.

Are you excited about your tour? Will you visit some new venues or even countries?

Duncan: We’ve been looking forward to it for about a year I guess. New countries not really, you already played in Hungary?
Storm: Yeah, but a long time ago.
Count: I’m really looking forward to it, since the tour was announced I’ve been looking forward to it. It’s the highlight of the year to finally have this tour. It was a weird feeling the night before the tour started two days ago, I was sitting at home thinking „yeah, the moment is here“. I’ve been waiting for this for a year and now we’re here and it’s really exciting.

Duncan: Hopefully!
Storm: Brothers of Metal are really cool guys. Great band too.

Do you have a message for your old and new fans?

Storm: No, of course we’re super proud of the old fans who have been with us for quite a long time and hopefully we’ll get some new fans on this tour. It would be great to see them, maybe next year on our tour… if there is one. It’s a surprise!
Count: Maybe?
Storm: We’re really grateful for everything that’s happened and we’re looking forward to the things that are going to happen.
Duncan: I hope a lot of new people will come here and get to know us through Brothers of Metal.
Count: I think the new people can see why it’s good to be part of the Grailknights family because we have VERY loyal fans and friends around this band that have been with us for many years now and I think it’s always a great feeling to see that family grow more and more. Not with kids, but you know. More adult fans with liquid bank accounts.
